Winter Wooziness & Farlie Frames #9

It's been a quiet week here. I'm wracking my brains to come up with something slightly more interesting to blog about today but whilst I have a few posts on the boil I just can't inspire myself to crack out anything significant today. Truth is work is winding down for Christmas and I'm slipping quite happily in to a winter coma. Cooking pies,  rediscovering the wooly item of my wardrobe and trying to get ahead of Christmas preps; shopping, making lists, talking to family about seeing everybody. Tying up loose work ends and most satisfyingly... Making plans for next year. 2016 is scaring me a bit (possibly hence the wilful winter coma). Euna will be skipping off to school, I have no doubt she'll settle in without skipping a beat but it'll change the landscape of so many things. Since having babies I'm pretty confident in my ability to be flexible with change but this seems sooooo permanent. Regardless of how I feel about it, the forms went in this week and I'm firmly focused on making her last year at home as fulfilled as possible.

So really the school looming is a good thing, because there's nothing like an end date to focus and motivate you to check things off the "I've been meaning to take them to..." list. And off to the groups, clubs and other mini-kiddo activities we go...

Here's us making the most of mid-week time with Nanny, walking in to town for lunch...

Baby Erin - Newborn Portraiture in Colchester, Essex

Brand new and beautiful little Erin came to me a few weeks ago and it was my favourite kind of session... Minimal, white and all about baby. Just a stack of white sheets and wraps and nothing but time to spend join at her pace. I love these sessions the best because without a list of "to get..." shots we can enjoy what baby wants to do and learning all the things we can learn about a one week old... Do they like to be snuggled in close and wrapped up tight? Do they like noise? Are they little nosey parkers looking about everywhere? Back sleeper? Front sleeper? Face puller? Finger stretcher? Snuffler? So much to find out and when new parents are overwhelmed with nappy changes, eager visitors and avalanching laundry piles these sessions are such a wonderful opportunity to enjoy all this learning and when we learn it each shot becomes a story. Lovely.

So here's baby Erin, in those few short hours, in those first precious days, where it was all about her...

Bow's 2! & Farlie Frames #8

My baby boy is 2 years old. That's 730 days of laughs, love, memories and teaching this first time mum-of-a-boy all about the joys of a teenie little dude person. Whenever my kids hit some kind of milestone (so especially birthdays) my brain turns in to that nifty still-frame-annimation app Flipagram and my mind sifts through every memory it can find of them on fast forward. Like I want to check I remember enough of it or have made the most of it somehow? Not that parenting ever seems to have a ceiling of satisfaction that you could hit and say "yep, nailed parenting that kid!" because parenting instincts being what they are we always find areas we worry we didn't do enough in.

So in an effort to give myself something less to worry about remembering here's my top 10 of things I want in my Bow-Bow memory slideshow of what he was like when he was 2...

1) He loves drawing. With any medium. Pens, chalk, crayons, magnetic drawing board, Aquadoodle... You name it! Although obviously what he loves best are "grown-up biros".

2) He's just learnt to say "willy". Just... Hilarious...

3) He loves keys. Lost keys? Ask Bow... Or cut out the middle man and just check his kitchen.

4) He LOVES Rich Tea biscuits. I sure he sees that blue packet of joy with a warm fuzzy dream-like halo Wayne's World style.

5) And he LOOOOOOOVES milk. It's just not worth greeting him in the morning or post-nap without it. Save your ears, get the milk.

6) His heroes are Timmy (the sheep from Timmy Time) and Makka Pakka. Squeals doing the Makka Pakka dance.

7) Not fussed on cake or anything c too sweet.

8) Gets really excited stroking animals. Especially the goats at the local farm shop.

9) He has to say "bub-bye" to everyone and everything 65 million times. It makes Sainsburys deliveries a little bit awkward actually...

And I'll wanna kept hold of this one... There's a kiss starved mother of a door-slamming teenager in my future no doubt...

10) I can get a kiss whenever I want. The kids is a one-man-smooch-machine and all I have to do to get him to pucker up is ask "kissy?" and he will stop whatever he's doing and charge at me lips pursed first.

But for now with my head a little more in the present... Here's Bow's big day in pictures...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY BOY! xxx

5 Things About Me You Can See In My Pictures... & Farlie Frames #7

5 things about me that you can see in my work...

1) My favourite colour is white.

Call it my Essex girl upbringing! I love white. I wear a lot of white, I have 3 drawers of white tops. Almost every wall in my home and every home I've ever decorated is some shade of white. My bedsheets are white.  I love a lot of scandinavian monochrome design. My fantasy "Grand Designs" build would be one of those enormous white minimalist box houses. All my studio set ups centre around a very strong white theme and all my lifestyle/location work uses a lot of overexposure to bring as much white in to pictures as possible.

2) I like space. Dislike clutter.

You'll see a lot of negative space in my pictures. I like how it focuses the subject and creates drama. I also like to live in space. We live very far from my husband's work to enjoy a larger home. We chose village life to see and feel space around us as much as possible. I never feel calmer than staring out to sea and I like to keep the house as decluttered as possible.

3) I love being outside.

Country girl. Brought up outside. In woods. With horses. Walking the dog. I walk whenever possible with the kids. I exercise just as much to be outside as to be fit. Hence soooo many woods pictures.

4) Always prefer simplicity over style and natural over intentional.

I wear minimal make-up, I think faces should look like faces. It's always my preference on clients too. I'm not high fashion but I do like natural textures in photos and my clothes. I like unposed. Gummy over-smiled smiles are the best.

5) Variety is the spice of life, I'll mostly have a go at anything.

When this photography business got up and running and I wasn't necessarily that good at it (by my own standards of where I wanted to be with it) I took a big deep breathe and decided the only way I going to get where I was going was to be ok with being average or even bad at things. Because that's the only way you get good at stuff. If you won't let yourself try things and be a beginner you'll never get to be great at anything. Since I decided this I've got good at a few different things I never thought I would be. And so I say I allow myself to say yes a lot. Ergo... A blog with with photographs of everything from babies to flowers to landscapes to people to whatever else will be next.

So there you have it... A little share about me and how it goes in to my work!

Baby Alexander - Newborn Portraiture Colchester, Essex

I have weeks of work to share with you and some stuff that I am seriously proud of at the moment. Proud; because I really feel like my work is starting to feel like "me" and represent what I think the kind of work I do should. And I think it should represent my subjects. The babies. Because babies are important. They're the purest of us all. They're all of our potential. They're our purpose (even when they're not ours). And for all these reasons and a million more they deserve beautiful captures. So I'm stripping my newborn sessions right back and learning the art of minimalism because...

"Minimalism is a pursuit of the essence of things, not the appearance." Massimo Vignelli

So it's all about baby. Not posing technique. Not colourful blankets. Elaborate rustic basket set ups. Baby. Most specially here; baby Alexander. And his beautiful thick dark hair. And his lovely little arm rolls. And his sleepy pouty lips. And how (unlike a lot of babies I photograph, he really is too chilled to for a startle reflex when his arms relax back above his shoulders. And how his nose wrinkles when he yawns. And anything else you can spot here, as whilst he's only a week old and there's not a lot to know about what he'll do, what he'll like, how he'll laugh or how he thinks, there is so much to be captured about who he is at the very beginning of his everything.

Baby Alexander...

Charity Woods & Farlie Frames #6

More woods! I have absolutely no idea why we go to the woods so much in the Autumn and barely in the summer... But here we are again. Rolling over logs to look for woodlice and finding good sticks for *insert any one of the million things toddlers like to do with a good stick*.

We powered through half term, doing a bit of everything and nothing. Some trips out, some afternoons colouring, some walks to the park and a good few hours in front of Cbeebies. Here we are on one of those walks with our little friend Josh... One of my very beloved NCT babies. Fun story: Joshua and Euna were due on the same day and I was hideously overdue, hormonal and very tired from a day with my sister when I got an email that he had arrived so I sat and sobbed. I cried and cried and shouted at Steve that this baby was never coming and it wasn't fair. I cried until that felt uncomfortable so I stood up and my waters popped! 823723746239 hours of labouring later... Josh had a buddy! ;)

And here we are (mummy Sarah and I) in Charity Woods chatting about their school applications and a ton of other things that felt a lifetime away back then...

Here we are FARLIE FRAMES #6!

Thank you so much to all the fab links that were added last week! Some seriously fab Halloween antics and some beautiful photography, if you missed any of them go see HERE!
